GOSPEL/une définition...
Le GOSPEL est un chant religieux afro-américain. Il s'est développé à la fin du XIXème siècle au Sud-Est des Etats Unis.
La musique afro-américaine est liée
à l'Histoire de l'esclavage aux USA
qui a commencé en Virginie au XVIIè s.
L'esclavage sera aboli en Amérique
en 1865 après la guerre Sécession
et grâce au Président Lincoln.
Mais cela n'empêchera pas le racisme de
se développer.
Le mot GOSPEL vient du mot « GOD » (Dieu) et « SPELL » (parole). A l’origine, ce sont des cantiques (chant religieux chrétiens) enseignés par les missionnaires blancs aux esclaves travaillant dans les plantations. Les esclaves vont transformer ces chants européens à leur manière en y apportant des éléments propre à leur culture africaine :
Call and response (appel et réponse) ou techniques responsoriale : c’est-à-dire l’alternance d’un soliste et d’un chœur.

Inflexions et sonorité particulière de la voix.
Les thèmes des textes sont souvent des messages d'espoir à travers le prétexte de la Foi.

Ce gospel sera repris dans une traduction française originale par Claude Nougaro en 1967. Il transforme les paroles de la bible en paroles contre le racisme et titre le morceau « Armstrong » en hommage au chanteur trompettiste du même nom
